Toyota in Australia has created a full size toy for kids both large and small. The Toyota Tonka concept is a more than capable pick-up combining the ruggedness and durability of which Toyota and Tonka are renowned.
Production design chief Nicolas Hogios said the extreme style and capability of the Hilux Tonka Concept would capture the imagination of kids and adults alike.
“We have taken Tonka out of the sand pit and reinvented Hilux from top to bottom. The concept is dramatic evidence that our team loves to have fun, we’re keen to explore new ideas and always looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”
The Hilux makeover starts with a 150mm increase in ride height, through the fitment of portal axles, heavy-duty suspension, Method NV alloy wheels with 12.5×35” Toyo Open Country M/T-R tyres, hub-mounted reduction gearboxes, heavy duty springs and remote reservoir shock absorbers. With rugged under-body protection plates and tubular rock sliders, the Hilux Tonka Concept can breeze over rugged terrain that would prove difficult for other stock off-roaders.
It’s also been equipped with a new front bar that is winch compatible, the bonnet has a carbon fibre skin and featuring an aggressive ‘power bulge’ with incorporated air scoops. The roof pod has the addition of high-performance LED lighting, providing excellent night vision for night stage events.
In the rear tub tweaks include; a new carbon fibre-wrapped tailgate, incorporating an integrated spoiler with dual air vents improving airflow. A tubular roll bar is used to secure and protect recovery gear including a spare wheel, fuel cans and storage boxes.
