The Kiravan … a globe trotting techno truck

We have all seen some stunning adventure trucks in our time with luxury fit-outs and nice gadgets, but the Kiravan has to be at the top of the pile.
Loosely based on a Unimog, I say loosely, as most of the mog kira-van-trucktractor unit has been tweaked or changed for the new stretched truck chassis to pull the trailer, which when coupled up runs as a 6×6 unit.
The Kiravan is the brain child and 5 year project of a chap called Bran Ferren who is the co-founder of a US company called Applied Minds that work for companies such as Disney.
The idea came to Bren to have a luxury camper that could negotiate the world without problems, without danger and without losing communications or an internet signal!
2014-KiraVan-02-700x500Named after his daughter Kira, the Kiravan, has slide outs, slide ups, as part of the accommodation section, a concealed three cylinder diesel powered off road motorbike, eighty meters of telecoms masts, satellite communications and internet, twenty two external video cameras all with night vision, enough water and supplies to last for weeks in the desert or freezing kiravan-7-crwastelands of the arctic circle. The fuel tank carries enough fuel for 2,000 miles and most of the vehicles operations can be run and monitored through a tablet.
There is a massive bank of electronics within the habitation area, which can also be operated from the driving position, as you can see from the photograph, it resembles a planes cockpit.2014-KiraVan-11-700x500
It weighs in at just under 23 tonnes and a length of 52 feet but can still contend with inclines of 45˚, it is lightly armoured and even has Kevlar lined tyres. The American inventor now in his 60’s will not disclose the price of this ultimate expedition vehicle, but has admitted it runs into the several millions mark. As Ferren says though, what price can you put on the heads of your family and children if you wish to travel the world in some slightly hostile environments from nature as well as people.

Take a short tour around the truck …
