The US military have finally announced the official demise of the Hummer to be replace by the Oshkosh a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.
When the contract is completed Oshkosh will have built a total of 49,100 for the Army and 5,500 for the Marine Corps and worth around $ 30 billion. The truck will be powered by a Banks 866T V8 Diesel engine based on the Duramax powerplant, all other details are confidential at present.
Oshkosh are no newcomers to the tactical vehicle market, their Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (M-ATV) has proven itself in Afghanistan with IED protection for troops. John Urias, president of Oshkosh Defence, said the company’s JLTV “is proven to provide the ballistic protection of a light tank, the underbody protection of an MRAP-class vehicle, and the off-road mobility of a Baja racer.” With improvement in every aspect of the vehicle, the types of terrain the troops will face will be tackled with ease, plus the JLTV will travel over terrain at speeds 70% faster than the M-ATV.
