The French are known to be fiercely patriotic when it comes to the automotive industry, but the French Army have just decided to buy Ford in what will be perceived as a blow to the French auto manufacturers.
The French military have decided it is time to replace their ageing fleet of Peugeot P4 light 4×4 jeeps that have been in service since 1983. After searching for a replacement through the French channels such as Peugeot/Citroen and the Dacia Duster (Renault built) finally the nod was given to Ford, for the simple reason nothing came close for load capacity and people carrying.
The first 1,000 trucks have been ordered based on the new Ford Ranger, with a load capacity of 1metric ton and the ability to carry 5 troopers, solid & strong diesel power units, with the ability to source parts world wide, this has to be a good choice for military needs.
The renewal will continue over the next few years with the promise of new French vehicles that will be integrated into military use in the future. This came after a spokesperson from Renault confirmed they would be making a pickup in the second half of this year.
