Team Sharp … rockin’ in Portugal

Xtrem Challenge Portugal.     June 2017

In their words; Team Sharp Gigglepin Racing

The event was held in Caminha North Portugal. The event runs over 4 days starting on a Thursday with scrutineering and signing all done we are than all put in order and convoyed to a restaurant on the coast.

We are fed with the finest Portuguese food than off to the first of the night stages that is more of a show stage for the people of the town. This consisted of 2 lanes side by side. Not knowing which lane we were racing in we walked them both to try and find the best line for both. As we got nearer to the start we were told that we were in the left hand lane the worst of the two we thought. We put in a fairly good time knowing that we had 3 more days of competition so all we had to do was finish. Friday and Saturday consisted of 36 stages over the 2 days. The sections were split up into 2 different areas on the mountain; we went to the furthest point of the mountain to work our way back towards Park Ferme. Sections were extreme but nothing at all like what we get in the UK, add in the blistering heat and this event really lives up to it name. Ben was happy in finding a new friend in Gordon (ground anchor). During the 10th stage on Friday we had a major problem with the starter motor packing up, this was the only mishap Delilah had all weekend the #960 racer was on

Both days were 16 hours long as there were night sections that followed a quick dinner break. We put in 2 great times on both night stages 1st on Friday 2nd on Saturday. There was quite a bit of waiting around on the night sections but this was made up by the crowds which surrounded us and all the other competitors had great banter and was all in all a great atmosphere to be in.

Favorite section of the event was section 19 which reversed and became section 35 which we set best times on both, long hard technical winching put us right back in our comfort zone. Sunday back down to the beach for the show stage where we had to complete the right hand lane from Thursday night, absolutely awesome going into this stage knowing that it was all about the win will it be us or Helder da Rocha and Jim Marsden who we’d spent all weekend jostling between positions and we have to say that if we had to come second to anybody we were glad it was our Gigglepin Racing team mates Helder and Jim.

We would like to thank Miguel Neiva and his team at the Xtrem Challenge Portugal for running a truly epic event we would also like to thank the continued support from all our sponsors for supplying us with the very best to get us the job done. Huge shout out to Chris Kelly, Karl and Martin and last but no means least a big thank you to all who have followed us on Facebook  we hope you enjoyed the coverage.
