Mercedes new AMG SUV

The latest offering from Mercedes in their SUV range is the GLC AMG.

The most important part of the transformation involves the vehicles’ motivation, which in this case is a version of the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 found in almost every other V8-powered AMG Mercedes.amg-suv

The base GLC63 SUV and coupe both get an iteration of the engine with 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The GLC63 S, which is only available in the coupe body style, ups the ante with 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. Both engines breathe through an exhaust with adjustable flaps to modify the sound. A louder, optional AMG Performance exhaust also has a button to open the flaps on command.

Regardless of trim, the V8 is coupled to an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed transmission. Basically, it’s a traditional automatic, but instead of a torque converter sending power from the engine to the transmission, it has a clutch pack. From the transmission, the power goes to an all-wheel-drive system that can vary merc-amg-suv2power to the front or rear. All GLC63s also get limited-slip rear differentials, too. The normal one gets a traditional mechanical unit, while the S gets an electronically controlled differential.

The suspension of the GLC63 models is a fully independent air suspension with adjustable damping. Both the transmission and suspension can be adjusted by selecting any of the drive modes available, which start with a soft-riding, slower shifting Comfort mode, and go up to either Sport+ on a GLC63 or Race on a GLC63S. These latter modes firm up the suspension and speed up shift times, while also keeping the revs higher.

Naturally the AMG transformation involves some visual changes as well. Immediately noticeable is the Panamericana-style grille with vertical chrome bars. The AMG GTs have the same style of grille. The GLC63s also have aggressive front bumpers with a dog bone-shaped air intake like that on the AMG GT R. The black plastic arches are widened and house 19-inch wheels on the regular GLC63, and 20-inch wheels on the GLC63 S. At the back, all GLC63s get lip spoilers and more aggressive rear diffusers. The interior is mostly standard GLC, but features some AMG badging.amg-merc-4

Both the interior and exterior can be spruced up with a variety of official Mercedes options. In addition to the performance exhaust, a selection of wheels, and some exterior trim options are available. The latter can include either gloss black or carbon fiber trim. Inside, the main options are different colors of leather and some sporty AMG seats. Pricing for the options hasn’t been revealed, and the same goes for the cars themselves.
