For those financially secure, eco dirt track drivers, Jaguar has released a preview if its very first electric SUV called the I-PACE. Debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Jaguar is aiming for the I-PACE to be in their showrooms ‘late’ 2018. This will be Jaguar’s first ever battery-powered vehicle and with a range of 220 miles per charge it can comfortably compete with the Tesla Model X.
The I-PACE will be powered by a 90 kWh battery pack that will drive a pair of 200-horsepower electric motors, one over each axle. The battery pack can be recharged up to 80% in 90 minutes and just 120 minutes for 100% using a 50kw DC rapid charger. Jaguar revealed the vehicle is on course to deliver 400 horsepower gifting it with an impressive acceleration of 60 mph in 4 seconds. A smidge faster then the Tesla, which accelerates to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. I-PACE can boast 516 lb.-ft. of torque giving All Wheel Drive stability with sports car agility ensuring a confident drive on all road surfaces, in all weathers.
Without that pesky ‘engine’ hogging all the space up front the I-PACE is styled on a ‘cab forward design’ freeing up more interior space for the 5 passengers. Now there is 36 litres of front luggage compartment plus the 530 litres in the rear. Keeping the interior feeling spacious under a panoramic roof they’ve used light colours right through to the design leather seats. There’s a dash of walnut finish to keep the luxurious feel fitting to a Jaguar.
The traditional instrument panel has been updated to a virtual screen in front of the driver, controlled using buttons on the steering wheel. A full-colour Head Up Display discreetly displays key information on the vehicle’s windscreen plus there’s a floating centre console.
Jaguar stated “The I-PACE Concept is … something altogether new: not a traditional sports car, saloon or SUV and absolutely not a traditional Jaguar.” With flush door handles and bold air ducts it has a dramatic look, the aerodynamic bonnet scoop certainly reflects a Jaguar waiting to pounce.
No price has been mentioned to date but with the SUV market growing at a rapid rate the Jaguar I-PACE is inevitably going to take a slice of the market, although we’re not sure how many will be spotted atop of a mountain having conquered a worthy track.
