In 2008 GM unveiled a concept at the Detroit Motor Show to compete against the mighty and very popular Jeep Wrangler, it was the Hummer HX. The HX was a three door, chopped down, lightweight version of the huge Hummer we all know, but with removable panels, 24 inch ground clearance and a V6 engine. It may well have gone into production but for the economic down turn that year, which brought GM to it’s knees, forcing the company to eject the brand names of Hummer, Saab, Pontiac and Saturn.
Fast forward a few years to today and GM is feeling financially a little better and considering taking on the Fiat/Chrysler Jeep Wrangler again with an new updated “HX like” concept model.
The rumour mill is also turning with tales of a revamped Jeep Wrangler for 2017, so General Motors need to pick up the pace if a new model is going to become reality and challenge the Wrangler in the market place.
